Andra Day has now officially entered the Oscar race. Unlike its history for best picture, the Globes has an excellent track record for best actress: Eight of the past 10 winners in the drama category have gone on to win the Oscar. (The two exceptions: Olivia Colman in 2018, and Emma Stone in 2017, both of whom won in the best actress, musical or comedy category those years.) Going into Sunday night, the clear front-runners for best actress were Frances McDormand (Nomadland) and Carey Mulligan (Promising Young Woman). Instead, the prize went to Andra Day for her searing performance in The United States v. Billie Holliday, making her just the second Black nominee to win best actress in a drama. (The first was Whoopi Goldberg for The Color Purple, in 1986.) With Rosamund Pike, the unexpected winner this year in the comedy/musical category for I Care a Lot, unlikely to get an Oscar nomination, Day may now have taken the lead over her better-known competitors, even though a snub from the Screen Actors Guild would seem to complicate the chances for a repeat on Oscar night.
When a snub is as good as a win. Like Parasite last year, the Korean American film Minari was relegated to the best-foreign-language category and was deemed ineligible for the top prize. But Parasite, after taking that award at the Golden Globes, went on to an upset win for best picture at the Oscars. Could Minari pull off a repeat scenario in 2021?
